Fishing

Hot August

Starting with the inshore fishing the Cubera, Mulato and Pargo Colorado are plentiful and consistent. If Rooster fish is on your bucket list you’re in luck. Normally they are rare caught in the summer but this year that’s not the case. Along the coastline around the island or on the buoys are chalk full of Dorado, striped Marlin and sails. We found slow trolling Bonito belly strips to be the best bet for all three species. Offshore is a bit of a mystery. All the conditions are perfect. There’s plenty of natural bait, flying fish, Bolitos and Chuhuil breezing everywhere.

Golden August

Dorado and striped Marlin are the main event.  The size of these golden acrobats are ranging from 10-20lbs with the occasional larger bull being landed.
Trolling strips of bonito belly ,sardines or rigged ballyhoos are getting it done. In the same general area the striped Marlin and sailfish are feeding as well. We noticed large schools of flying fish and ballyhoo in the area, so that would be my guess as to why the fish are all hanging together. On the seamounts there is still good bottom fishing, Giant Cubera snapper and Cabrilla mainly on the yo-yo, though the hook up and landing percentage is tough.

Late July Fishing Report

We can officially say the spring/summer transition period has ended.  The conditions needed for great summer fishing are finally here. Bait is plentiful and literally everywhere, Dorado has been plentiful, the striped Marlin are abundant but, seem to have a little case of lock jaw. We’ve had a few reports of Wahoo. Some of our more experienced Spearos have had success. Also, We had a blue released last week pushing 350lbs and a few smaller in the 200lb class. Anyway, fishing is developing nicely.

This week most of the boats came in with Multiple species of Pargo, Cabrilla, Alamaco Jacks, yellowtail, trigger fish and dorado all in the same day. We had a guest from New Orleans land a 100lb Striped Marlin on 30lb test fishing a dead sardine, released of course. One of our most frequent guest went out with his family to our little secret tuna hole and on their last drift with Capt Jose pinned a 138 lb tuna.
