La Paz Fishing Report / JULY 10th 2020
Not much has changed in the last week regarding fishing, but we have seen a big increase in tourist here in a puerta Cortes. Unfortunately the beaches and the islands are still closed but fishing is allowed.
The weather is hot hot hot. Saturday we tip the scales at a balmy 109 degrees. Ugh. Bait is plentiful both mackerel in the bay and sardines around Tecolote.
We had a nice surprise this week as a pod of Orcas were hanging around Punta Coyote and EspÃritu Island. They were very playful coming right up to the boat for a photo opportunity then moving on.
Along the coast from Punta Coyote to Rosario the Sargasso grass is still pretty thick making for epic Dorado fishing. Slow trolling sardines around the paddies early morning is almost a guaranteed limit, these are quality fish ranging between 15-25 lbs. Later in the morning the captains are fishing the rocky spots with mackerel and 3oz sinkers picking up a few late season Yellowtail and cabrilla. Some of these fish have been the largest of the season so bring your best game.
Offshore where the water conditions are better the Striped Marlin are the best bet trolling lured or site casting live Mackerel. Tuna are still a no show. The locals are reporting one here one there but nothing consistent. It’s kinda like whack a mole, never in the same place two days in a row. We’re hoping as the water conditions stabilize and hopefully the seiners stay away we should start to see an increase in Tuna counts.
We will do our best keeping you updated on the COVID restrictions, as they seem to change faster than I can write.
Please stay safe, hope to see you soon.
Keep the faith
Scotto.
