January 23rd Fishing Report

La Paz Fishing Report / January 23rd 2021

Weather & Bait

The crowds seem extremely light as we settle into our traditional winter weather pattern. Perhaps due to the season as well as the crazy conditions at the airports. With day time highs in the mid 70’s cooling off at night to the low 60’s, over all pretty sweet weather.
The water conditions are getting cold with low visibility pretty much on par for this time of year, although there’s plenty of people swimming with the whale sharks so I guess it’s not too cold.

Most days there’s plenty of bait to be made or bought. The wind can make it tough sometimes but, they seem to settle back down as soon as the winds lay down.
Mackerel and caballitos are scattered throughout the bay caught with Sabiki’s and sardines along the beaches around Balandra for purchase.

Fish Talk

We are once again finding Dorado scattered throughout the bay and San Lorenzo channel. Things that make you say what? I guess we can now call these the La Paz school of Dorado as they just refuse to leave.
Sierra are in the mix along the coastline in front of the Cmex plant all the way out to the green channel marker. Trolling small anything will get you multiple hook ups quickly.

The Yellowtail and Almaco Jacks are the mainstay of our fishery and this should continue thru spring. As the season progresses the size of the schools should continue to build as the fish start to settle in on food sources and ready to spawn. Currently the Yellowtail are medium size12-15 pounds and the Almaco Jacks are 20-25 lbs. these weights should double in the next few weeks.
These as well as Cabrilla and Pargo are being caught on the rocky drops and seamounts. Jigging scrambled egg pattern or blue and chrome or live bait with weights will get the job done. Just be mindful of the initial Strike, as these guys will rock you before you know what just happened.
This pattern should continue for the months to come with quality and quantities being the biggest difference.

The Whale Sharks are in full swing rocking everyone’s world. These guys are magnificent. If you have never done this please give it a go. It is truly spectacular.

I leave it at that for the week.
Come down and see us it’s way warmer then most of the US.
Keep the faith
Scotto.
