Fishing around La Paz continues to offer a little bit of everything. Water conditions remain somewhat inconsistent, with greener water still present throughout parts of La Paz Bay. However, anglers willing to adapt and cover some ground are finding very good fishing opportunities.
Bottom fishing continues to be one of the most reliable options right now. Cabrilla remain abundant around rocky structure, while anglers are also finding cubera snapper, huachinango, grouper, and even the occasional yellowtail around deeper spots. Almaco jack are also showing up and providing good action on both live bait and jigs.
Current Water Conditions
Water quality remains spotty throughout the region. Areas inside and around La Paz Bay continue to hold greener water, which has made offshore fishing inconsistent in some locations. However, cleaner blue water can be found farther offshore, especially to the south, where pelagic fishing has improved considerably.
Sardina and mackerel remain the top bait choices. Flexibility continues to be the key to success, as water and fishing conditions can change significantly from one area to another.
Bottom Fishing Continues to Produce
For anglers looking for steady action, the bottom bite remains strong. Cabrilla continue to lead the catches around rocky reefs and structure, with grouper, cubera snapper, huachinango, almaco jack, and scattered yellowtail mixed in.
Live bait and vertical jigging have both been productive, depending on the conditions and target species.
Blue Water Producing Dorado, Marlin and Tuna
The best pelagic action has been coming from boats making longer runs toward cleaner blue water. Dorado fishing has been particularly good, with quality fish showing consistently around temperature breaks, current lines, and floating debris.
Blue marlin have also been providing some exciting opportunities. Boats pushing even farther south have been finding yellowfin tuna as well.
Offshore fishing is not equally consistent throughout the region because of the changing water conditions. However, anglers willing to make the longer run are being rewarded with excellent blue-water action.
Final Thoughts
Overall, fishing around La Paz is in a very good place right now. Water conditions are still somewhat mixed, especially inside the bay, but there are plenty of options available depending on the type of fishing you are looking for.
Bottom fishing continues to produce cabrilla, grouper, cubera snapper, huachinango, almaco jack, and the occasional yellowtail. Meanwhile, cleaner offshore water is holding quality dorado, blue marlin, and yellowfin tuna for boats willing to venture farther south.
With summer conditions slowly settling in, we are optimistic that offshore fishing will continue improving over the coming weeks.
