Feels Like Summer

La Paz Fishing Report / June 29th 2020

July is just around the corner and we’re finally feeling like summer is here.

Even with very light tourism and limited international flights we are starting to see more people out and about in the city as well as the resorts. According to sources to Puerta Cortes resort will be full ( based on current limit regulations) for the month of July.

The weather is also starting to look like summer, with light winds and increased humidity. The water temperature is climbing nicely on the seamount we metered 84 degrees. Perfect for the Annual migration of our Pelagic species.

Bait

Bait is plentiful. Inside the bay we still have large supplies of Mackerel and Caballitos. Sardines are available on the way to the fishing grounds and the seamounts are chock full of chuhuili and Bolitos.

The beginning of the week we had a strong showing of AmberJacks mixed with a few lingering yellowtail. These fish are suspended in about 70-100 feet water both the traditional fishermen and Spearos were catching their limits.

Later in the week we saw the tides drop to almost nothing, marea muerta. Normally when the water is still the fish tend to go off the feed, as this was the case. Fortunately things should be back to normal next week as the tide pattern changes and the summer weather patterns settle in.

We have had several tuna sightings lately with many fish hooked but only a few landed. These fish are feeding on dead sardines drifting the high spots around the island. The tuna have been averaging 80lbs with 160lb fish mixed in, the reason for so many lost fish.

Huachinango, Pargo and Cabrilla are still in the mix on the high rocky spots as well as Dorado near Punta Coyote close to shore. July is normally the green flag of our summer fishing and so far everything looks lined up for a great season.
