La Paz Fishing Report / May 1st
Weather & Bait
Both the weather and water conditions are starting to show signs that summer is on the horizon. The mornings are comfortable as they are starting to warm up with nice not too hot
afternoons .
The winds are starting to shift from predominantly North to South/West, our Coromuels.
Bait is plentiful as it has been all year. The sardines are huge like 3-4 inches long. Macks and cabs are still available in the bay.
Fischgespräch
Regarding fishing it looks like we are beginning to start the transition period.
We are still having killer days on the yellowtail, cabrilla and snapper but finding these schools is becoming more difficult. The yellowtail have moved up in the water column,
chumming sardines then casting into the boil seems to be working best. The water temperature is definitely on the rise, 73 plus degrees. These cold water species will start to move
to deeper cooler water as this trend continues.
There’s a large build up of sargasso grass from the San Lorenzo channel up the west side of Espíritu Santos island. This also happens to be where the sardines are so it very
convenient to buy your bait and start fishing within a few hundred yards.
Slow trolling sardines or paddie hopping, throwing a few sardines into each grass paddie is producing some nice 15lb Dorado. They are normally the first of the Pelagic species to
come up and should only get better as the water continues to warm historically followed by the Striped Marlin.
There has been more reports of the Tuna bite at the North end of Cerralvo island. It’s a total hero or zero deal. If you decide to do this and aren’t the lucky few in the right place at the
right time you will probably be skunked for the day.
If you do get hooked up there’s a very good chance you may catch the fish of a life time as these tuna are averaging 200 lbs plus.
Regarding our Magdalena fishing trips. We sold out so fast we are discussing bringing another boat. We are waiting to see if there is enough interest to bring additional resources. If
you are interested in this incredible trip please give the office a call or email. We will probably make a decision in the next couple of weeks.
That’s it for now,
Have a great week
