Warm Weather and Blue Water in La Paz
Summer is definitely settling into La Paz now. This week brought us very good weather overall, with light wind and calm conditions on the water. The bigger change is the heat. Even at night, things are not cooling down like they were just a short time ago.
That means hydration is becoming a big part of the fishing routine. If you are heading out, bring plenty of water, sun protection, and be ready for those warm summer days. The water has been blue and sitting in the mid-80s Fahrenheit, which is keeping the offshore bite active.
Fishing has been good overall. Some days have been a little slower than others, but in general, the captains are finding fish and focusing mainly on dorado and tuna.
Dorado Are Still Fishing Well
Dorado continues to be one of the main highlights right now. We are still seeing very nice fish, mostly in the 20 to 40 pound range, with a few pushing closer to 50 pounds.
Most of the dorado are coming on live sardina, which has been the best bait this week. The mackerel have become harder to find with the warmer water, so the captains are not spending valuable fishing time chasing bait that is not consistent right now.
When the fish are up and active, casting stick baits and poppers has also been a good option. The dorado bite has not been wide open every single day, but overall, it has stayed productive and fun.
Tuna in Different Sizes
The tuna bite is still going, with fish ranging from football-size tuna to better fish around 60 to 70 pounds. Live sardina has been the main producer, but the captains are also getting action with artificials.
For tuna, casting stick baits and poppers has worked when fish are feeding on top, and trolling squirts and cedar plugs has also been part of the program. The tuna have been mixed in size, but there are still good opportunities for anglers who are patient and ready when the bite turns on.
Marlin Around and Good Signs Ahead
There were also some marlin around this week, including striped marlin and blue marlin. Nothing especially large was reported, and the marlin caught this week were released.
Looking ahead, we are watching the water temperature closely. With the warm water and the possibility of El Niño effects, we are hoping things do not get too hot too quickly and that the bite stays consistent.
For now, there are plenty of good signs. The weather is calm, the water is blue, dorado are still a solid target, and tuna are keeping things interesting.
