La Paz Fishing Conditions This Week
This past week around La Paz was a bit hit-or-miss. The fishing was still a little off compared to the wide-open bite we had a couple of weeks ago, and results really depended on where each boat decided to go.
Some boats had slow days, while others put together solid catches. Offshore, the water warmed up quite a bit, and with El Niño in the picture, that was not a huge surprise. The warmer water also came in off-colored, which made things a little more complicated.
The good news is that conditions have started to look a bit better over the last few days, so we are keeping our fingers crossed that the bite continues to improve.
Dorado Closer to Shore
The boats that stayed closer to shore had the most consistent action this week. They were getting limits of dorado every day. Most of the fish were not huge, but they were decent fish, with a couple of bigger bulls mixed in.
It was not wide-open dorado fishing, but it was steady enough for the boats that made the right call and stayed in the better water.
Inshore Fishing and Billfish
A few boats mixed in some inshore fishing and did well on snapper, along with releasing some roosterfish. That gave us a nice change of pace on the days when offshore conditions were not the best.
We also saw a couple of striped marlin and one mid-size blue marlin this week. Offshore on the structure, there are good numbers of small yellowfin tuna around. They are fun fish and great for sashimi, but you want the weather to be right before making that run. There are also plenty of sharks out there, so once you hook up, you better reel fast.
Looking Ahead
That is the scoop for now. It was a mixed week — some slow days, some good ones, and plenty of decisions to make each morning depending on the water and weather.
The dorado closer to shore were the most reliable bite, with some snapper, released roosterfish, marlin, and small yellowfin tuna also in the mix. Hopefully the water keeps cleaning up and the bite starts picking back up again.
We are also really looking forward to our Pacific side operation out of Magbay. The reports from over there are already on fire, and we are excited for what is coming.
