La Paz Fishing Report / December 6th 2020
Weather & Bait
So long November, hello December. As we enter the holidays and winter months the fish reports get harder to write. The crowds are light, I flew to the states last weekend from Cabo. There were 6 of us on the entire plane.
The north winds are in full swing. These are our winter prevailing winds that normally cycle 4 days of wind 3 days less or no wind. The air and water temperatures are dropping looking more and more like winter. Bait supplies are still available with plenty to go around since there are not many boats fishing at this time.
Fischgespräch
The folks that are fishing are primarily targeting Pargo and Cabrilla. Inshore there are plenty of Sierra up to 6 pounds. Trolling small rápalas in approximately 25’ of water are filling the coolers. These toothy critters are a blast on light tackle and great eating.
A few Dorado are sticking around in the bay and around the island. Small lures or slow trolling live bait will entice a bite. A few wahoo are getting tagged but this isn’t consistent anymore and I’ll say it again, the Tuna were a no show. My guess is after the holidays we will start looking around for yellowtail. Looking at the water conditions one might expect an early year for those home guard moss backs. We’ll see.
Our Mag Bay liveaboard season is now finished and all the boats are on their way back. The season for this adventure was incredible. Epic wahoo some tuna and some of the largest grouper I’ve seen in decades. The stripe Marlin bait ball experience wasn’t as crazy as years past. Not sure why. Soon the sardine migration will start to head north up the Sea of Cortez bringing these guys with them.
