More Yellowtail Action

La Paz Fishing Report / January 24th 2021

Weather & Bait

As we near the end of January, I can’t really say there were any real surprises. The water cooled and turned off color. The winds picked up and blew pretty steady from the north and with Covid restrictions, tourism was hard to predict and probably will continue to be for the next couple of months.

Nevertheless, the sun still rises here in baja, and for those who can make the trip, the weather is still forgiving and allows us to venture out to sea.

Fish Talk

All that being said it is definitely looking like we are starting our yellowtail season a bit early. We are not catching a lot of fish per spot but fortunately these YT grounds are not far from each other. So a couple here a couple there makes for a great day. Also the fish that are on the chew right now have doubled in size from last week.

Macs and Cabs are the preferred baits with a 4-6 oz weight 50lb fluorocarbon on the high rocky spots, sea mounts and all the little secret spots our captains have been fishing their whole lives are producing fish. Mixed in with the YT are monster Cabrilla and snapper. These fish are eating the same baits, same setup. Another great technique when the fish aren’t settled in yet, is to have your captain pull up to each point and quickly drop a jig, scrambled egg is the best color. This will allow you to cover more ground, and there’s nothing more exciting then getting bit on the jig.

This is great news as normally these fish will hang out thru May. We had our best Tuna siting all year, go figure. None were caught but sited by multiple boats. All the fish that are being caught are the best eating these waters have to offer. Bring your coolers, they will get filled with beers and fish alike.

With the new flights from American Airlines from Dallas and Phoenix it’s never been easier to get to La Paz and the whale Shark adventures are in full swing. This is a once in a lifetime experience and only minutes from your hotel, we are booking quickly so please give us a call oro send us an email so we can reserve a boat for your preferred dates. We hope to see you soon!
