May the Fish be With You

La Paz Fishing Report / May 9th 2021

Weather & Bait

As we move our way through May, the conditions seem to be improving nicely. The winds are shifting to our predominant summer morning coromuel dying off in the early afternoon.

The water is warming as well. Normal for this time of year the temps can vary as much as 10 degrees in 20 miles. The water clarity is improving and should continue as long as the winds stabilize and we don’t get any big upwellings.

Bait is in good supply. Large sardines are being made and sold at Tecolote, and squid for chunking is available at the office.

Fish Talk

Overall the fishing has been good. A nice variety of big Pargo and Cabrilla, white bonito and 50 pound class AmberJacks has been the main attraction. These species are right on schedule and should continue thru June. Some charters have opted to go south and fish the paddies and buoys doing well on Dorado to 15 lbs.

Last week we seem to have had a lull in the action. I truly believe this is tide related. The big tides that push a lot of water have been in the middle of the night leaving us with a wimpy half meter tide in the morning and afternoon. This will change as this week progresses so we will see. My guess is a significant improvement in the bite.

Those elusive tuna that kept popping up last week never made a show. We found them by accident last week and did well, this week we had a few boats target them and nothing. It’s still early for the tuna to be this far north, but you never know. There’s been a few wahoo spotted and a couple hooked unfortunately not landed. This should pick up as well as the water warms and conditions stabilize.

It looks like another busy week so we should continue to have more information and updates as the weeks progress.

That’s it for now
Keep the faith
