Winter Weeks

La Paz Fishing Report /February 16th 2019

Weather & Bait

As the winter weeks keep passing by, the wind is still the story of the week. Cold green water accompanied by a full moon made for tough conditions. Strong currents associated with the full moon didn’t help things out. That being said, next week is looking much better. Monday winds are looking much lighter and air temperatures are reaching the mid 70s and a declining moon are all positive signs.

Bait is now easily made in the bay. The mackerel are stacked up and they’re on the small side which is perfect for the size of yellowtail that are holding on the rocky spots and seamounts; Down rigging slow trolled live mackerel 20’ above the bottom are getting bit on a regular bases when we can get on the water.

Fish Talk

Cabrilla and Pargo Colorado are mixed in the schools of yellowtail which makes for a nice variety filling the coolers. 3/0 hooks with 50lb fluorocarbon leader bridled or nose hooked trolled at 1 1/2 knot at depth should be the pattern all season. For those with a little more ambition yo-yo a Salas 6x blue and chrome or scrambled egg jig are mostly getting bit on the fall.

Next week we have better weather and more boats scheduled, so we should have a better idea on the bite. There are plenty of Dorado in the bay just off pichilingue. Slow trolling Mack’s on the surface or small feathered lures are getting limits with a dozen releases. These fish aren’t big 8-10 lbs but a blast on light spinning gear.

What's Next

We are now finished with the sport shows, thanks again to all of you who signed up, we’re looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

No word on tuna but I believe they are still around. As the water conditions start to improve these bruts should start to show around the seamounts.

Looking forward to the weeks ahead. With our new Catamaran being delivered this weekend !

Until next week,
Keep the faith
