Merry Christmas !

La Paz Fishing Report / December 22nd 2019

Weather & Bait

As a Merry Christmas nears, we are seeing more activity in town as well as most of the resorts. Restaurants are busy the malecón is festively decorated and families are out and about every evening.

Unfortunately along with the winter festivities comes our persistent north wind. Early in the week the winds were unforgiving letting up to better conditions as the week came to an end, but some tours could still work, like our whaleshark excursions.

When the weather allowed, we had a few boats make their way to the fishing grounds near the island. Bait availability was limited, due to light charters activity, as the pangeros just don’t spend their mornings trying to make bait that they probably won’t sell.

Bottom fishing for Pargo and Cabrilla on the other hand was the best bet . These fish are still deep lying in the rocks but as the season develops should start moving up to shallower water. If you took the time to catch a few mackerel and caballitos on sabikis and fished with heavy lead or down riggers these tasty fish were eager to bite.

Fish Talk

For now the Pelagic’s are nowhere to be found, that’s not to say they aren’t around, but our current weather conditions just won’t allow us to spend the time searching the traditional areas. That being said we are hopeful that they will make a late season return as they often do. We did have a bit of a lucky strike at one of the yellowtail spots In search of the home guard moss backs. These fish should start steadily coming in looking for their spring time spawning grounds and normally settle in through April.
