La Paz Fishing Report / June 6th 2021
Weather & Bait
I think it’s safe to say summer has arrived. With day time temps in the mid to upper 90’s, and morning southwest winds giving way to flat calm afternoons. The water temperature is climbing, as we saw surface temps break 80 degrees for the first time this year. The caveat is there seems to be a pretty strong thermocline around 60 feet. This is trapping cold water at depth holding the spring species in place around the seamounts and other bottom structure. This isn’t a bad thing, although a mild upwelling can flip the water over pretty quick.
Honestly, I could cut and paste last weeks report. Not much has changed.
As we enter our summer season, all the signs for a good year seem to be falling in place.
Hablar de peces
There are sargasso paddies everywhere some large enough to walk on. As the water continues to warm up, the Dorado will start make their daily rounds looking for bait seeking refuge underneath the floating grass. These Mahi’s are running 10-25lbs with daily limits a common occurrence. Stripe Marlin are starting to show as well. With so much bait hanging around I think they have settle in for the season. Actually, yesterday one striped Marlin followed our trolling, but maybe it didn’t have enough tasty look for bitten it.
On the other hand, due to the thermocline I spoke about earlier the seamounts are still holding large AmberJacks, yellowtail, Cabrilla and giant Cubera snapper. These are cooler water fish that normally are gone by now. “ nice bonus and all great eating”.
We also had a good time with friends from Pistoleros del Mar, some good size Almaco Jacks and one Yellowtail.
Tuna Talk
There have been reports of tuna 40-50 miles offshore running under the porpoise. They are being fished by the locals, but are too far for a daily charter. That being said it’s a good sign that the tuna are making their way north avoiding the local seiners. As the season develops the tuna normally move in closer searching food sources around the islands and seamounts.
We still have tuna inshore around the islands. These fish are not there every day but they are huge and worth pursuing if your fishing multiple days. Last week 200lb class tuna were seen feeding in our chum line. Unfortunately nothing landed.
More good news, American Airlines is back flying to La Paz direct from Dallas and Phoenix. Check out their schedules.
That’s it for this week
Hope we see you soon,

Keep the faith,
