La Paz Fishing Report / September 19th 2021
Weather & Bait
With Hurricane Olaf We’ll a stern, the big question was how did the storm effect fishing?
By Monday the water had settled down leaving some floating debris and a few degrees cooler. Neither one a bad thing. The bait didn’t seem
to be effected at all by the surge. The sardines are huge and for sale at Tecolote. Here’s the deal. If your looking for Dorado pick up sardines
at Tecolote, drive across the channel to El Moro. Slow troll the dines until you have 6-8 Bonito. This shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes. Cut
the Bonito into strips approximately 6” long. Pin these on a #2 circle hook and troll slowly looking for any fishy signs. Birds ,current lines,
breezing bait and many times the strikes are just blind.

Usually the Dorado are in pairs but many times they’re in schools of 8-10 fish. Since we are now later in the season the fish have had
time to put on a few pounds, so 15-25 pounds are common.
Inshore fishing off the points or rocky areas are still giving up Pargo and cabrilla as well as trigger fish and large pacific Bonito. All are
great eating and a blast on light tackle.
We had our first real encounter with tuna. Better late than never.
These fish are not on a wide open bite yet but they are here and by the kooks of things are starting to settle in. The fish we saw on
Thursday were in the 20-30 kilo range rolling on the surface literally feet from the boat. A few were caught and a few broke off. This is
exciting, finally they are here. We should see a lot more activity and better results in the weeks ahead.
Regarding the Bill fish action it’s just plug and play off the seamounts, El Bajo or El Charro or the East side of Cerralvo Island. The
Striped Marlin aren’t huge but scrappy. The bigger guys should be moving in soon. Especially now the tuna are working their way up.
