Weather & Bait
This week we have seen the formation of the first tropical storm of the season named IVO. Although the convection bands and slightly colder water around our latitude will weaken and steer it away from the Baja peninsula, we’ll still get some of it’s rains and humid weather and some pretty good swell on the pacific, which is good news for surfers in the area.
A big school of Caballito was spotted just south of Espiritu Santo Island, which is good news because we can diversify our bait options, hopefully attracting other fish like Wahoo, Marlin and Tuna will like the variety, just as they have liked the squid over the last few days.
We recently implemented a “captains for hire” operation that ran a couple of trips with a private boat, which ended up releasing a couple of sailfish and small marlin but decided to land a decent sized blue marlin which has now been vacuum packed and is on it’s way back to the states. If you have a boat down here and would like to have one of our experienced captains come fishing with you please contact us and we will make it happen.
Also ran several charters this week with some bringing back a few Dorado and Yellowfin Tuna, which are still pretty line-shy. 50 Pound leader in the morning and 30 pound leader in the afternoon seems to be the ticket, the bite is very early tapering off by early afternoon. They have ranged in the 50-80 pounds class, but they seem to be feeding abundantly and gaining weight on a daily basis.
Some of the fish we have collected will be processed at our kitchen and canned in mason jars for our upcoming trips to serve as lunch for our clients in our charters, hopefully enjoying a taste of what’s to come when the reels start running. Pargo, Cabrilla and Pacific Bonito have also been brought in to add a nice variety for light tackle fishing.
As August is coming to an end, the Yellowfin seem to be settling into their summer pattern and we’ll be there to get our fair share. Remember to get your fishing licenses and make sure to ask about our new UV blocking apparel that just came in to the souvenir store stock.
